This quick and easy recipe for an Overnight Facial Moisturizer will help your skin glow and stay healthy, without feeling oily! This tried-and-tested recipe is perfect for all skin types. Use it before bed to lock in hydration while you sleep.
When I was younger I had very oily skin and it’s only recently that the balance leveled out. The idea of putting any oils on my face was just inconceivable. Why would my skin need MORE oil?
I’ve found through experimentation with a few ingredients that an overnight facial moisturizer can really help my skin glow and stay healthy without being oily.
Testing Carrier Oils
I began creating this recipe with jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is amazing because it’s easily absorbed into hair and skin. Lots of people just love it because it doesn’t leave a greasy feeling. When I used it within my daily beauty routine I found that the combination of essential oils and jojoba oil just left my skin wanting more. Jojoba oil is very light and my skin just needed deeper moisture.
Next, I tried grapeseed oil. That was tricky because the only grapeseed oils I knew about were cheap oils extracted with solvents. There was no way I was putting that on my face. So I kept researching and found some grapeseed oils (very few) that are organic and cold-pressed without using yucky chemicals. So I bought a bottle and I really love it. I just didn’t love it on my face.
I use grapeseed oil now for essential oil rollerball blends. It goes on silky and smooth and absorbs quickly. There is a little bit of an odor (a little like wine) that I just didn’t love when it was so close to my nose. So I was still on the search for the perfect oil for my sensitive face.
I had heard about sweet almond oil and I had used it as a moisturizer after a bath or in the winter months. I just didn’t think it would work on my face since it’s a little heavier than jojoba and grapeseed oils. Boy was I wrong. It’s perfect for my face in so many ways. I noticed a difference after only one night of using this recipe. My skin was smooth and moisturized!
Testing Essential Oils
So now that I found a good fatty vegetable oil to use as a base, I needed the perfect mixture of essential oils. I started with equal parts of Lavender, Frankincense, and Tea Tree essential oils. They all have great benefits (see details below) but the ratio was a little too astringent for what I was looking for.
So after some playing around I boosted the Lavender and reduced the Tea Tree. Perfection!

This overnight facial moisturizer is just that – to be worn overnight. It would definitely not be a good oil blend for me to wear under makeup as it takes a while for the oil to be absorbed (Most of the time I apply my favorite mineral makeup directly after applying toner).
Plus, the combination of essential oils that I use offers their own calming and peaceful influence in my nighttime routine.
Not the DIY Type? Young Living makes a CBD Beauty Boost that is wonderful as a nighttime moisturizer. It contains a combination of pure, potent CBD, tamanu oil, grape seed oil, and rose essential oil for a luxurious experience.

thats alot of eo’s!! what’s the concentration on this??
Beth K says
We’ve had rave reviews about the effectiveness of this concentration. The dilution is approximately a 22% strength of essential oils to carrier oil.
Kate says
I agree. That is very strong. It’s probably fine for short term use.
Jenn says
We are releasing one soon, actually! It’s on our calendar. 🙂
Elaine says
Looking forward to your morning moisturizer
Elaine says
Also where do I find a 1oz dark colored jar?
Beth K says
We have the jar we used inside the ingredients list. Just click on the text that says 1 oz dark glass bottle and you’ll find what you need.
Fernanda says
How long does this mixture would last in a bottle…perhaps if I forget to use everyday? Thanks
Beth K says
It would last for quite a while. I use very little (a few drops a night) and it lasts for several months at that rate.
Shelly B says
Ive been considering making a facial moisturizer but wonder how strong does it smell. I love lavender at night but placing this directly on my face I wasnt sure how strong it would be. Ive not used a carrier oil before so maybe that would reduce the strength of the scent.
Beth K says
Carrier oils definitely dilute the aroma but they also allow it to stay around longer, so maybe not exactly the same effect you’re thinking. The essential oils in this recipe could be cut in half to be combined with the same amount of carrier oil to see how you like it.
Ray Selman says
Have you released the morning moisturizer?
Diana M says
Hi Ray! You can find the Morning Moisturizer recipe in our Healthy Hair and Skin Care eBook. It is not on our site at this time. It’s amazing!

Would avocado oil work well instead of sweet almond oil
Diana M says
Yes! We also like this recipe with sweet almond oil, jojoba, and rosehip.
Lana Reinhart says
I haven’t tried using almond oil as a carrier oil for moisture recipes so far. Will have to try and compare to using the butters.
Ann Fuller says
I normally use YL V6 carrier oil with my recipes. So would that be OK to use?
Recipes With Essential Oils says
Absolutely! That is a great choice.
