I love the Christmas movie, Elf, with Will Ferrell [1], and cheerfulness, and all things Christmas. Let’s take it one step further and spread more cheer by spreading the love of essential oils to all our guests.
Take a little time to create this Christmas Diffuser Ornament and hang it anywhere that could use a little more cheeriness.
This diffuser ornament is easy to make and only takes a few simple supplies. Yes, it’s a modification (and improvement) of our very popular DIY Essential Oil Car Diffuser [2]. This is jumbo sized and easier to load with oils.
Here are the keys to why this ornament is awesome for diffusing around your home during the holidays:
First, we start with natural air-drying clay [3]. This is important to allow the oils to be absorbed into the clay. (Don’t be like us and try and use only a polymer clay. They’re specifically designed to NOT absorb anything.)
Second, the size of the ornament is huge. It’s 8 inches in diameter and completely beautiful [4]. While this may be too big for your tree, you can hang it on your front door or on your mantle for a festive decoration that smells amazing! Of course, you can use any size ornament you like, but how cute is the giant snowflake?!
(If you use a different cookie cutter, then make sure to poke a hole for the ribbon to run through BEFORE the clay dries. The snowflake already has built-in holes so we don’t detail that step in the directions below.)
Next, the big size of the ornament gives it plenty of room on the back to load the oils onto. I love this because now I don’t have to be careful with the painted side. There’s almost no chance that I’m going to mess this up.
Finally, you can make these inexpensive decorations and put them ALL OVER YOUR HOUSE. Can you just imagine how amazing that is going to smell?!

Christmas Diffuser Ornament
Ingredients
- Parchment paper [6]
- Natural air drying clay [3]
- Rolling pin specifically for clay projects [7]
- Snowflake Cookie Cutter [4]
- Folk Art Extreme Glitter Acrylic Paint – Turquoise [8]

- ribbon
- 5 drops Orange essential oil
- 3 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oil
- 1 drop Clove essential oil
- 1 drop Rosemary essential oil
Directions
- Cover your workspace with parchment paper. Take a handful of the clay into your hand. Work it vigorously with your hand to warm up and soften the dough. This will make it much easier to roll out.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Make sure it’s big enough to cut out all the edges of your snowflake. If you need to add a little more, then work some more dough and roll it out where need.
- Cut out the snowflake and remove it from the cutter gently. Remove all the inner holes and details so that they are not attached while the clay dries. Let the ornament cure for 24 hours.
- Paint the front of the ornament making sure to coat the outside and inside edges. Let each coat of paint dry for 30 minutes in between. We used 3 layers on ours to achieve the look we wanted. (You don’t want to paint the back where the oils are applied.)
- Run the ribbon through a hole and tie in a knot to use as a hanger. The ribbon is optional if you’re not going to be hanging the snowflake, but instead propping it up in your decor.
- Apply essential oils to the unpainted backside of the clay diffuser ornament. Reapply oils whenever the scent seems to fade. This might be every 7 – 10 days during the holidays.
