Makeup Remover

For gentle removal of your daily makeup, try our homemade Makeup Remover that will leave your face clean, refreshed, and lightly moisturized. Don’t skip this very important step in your nightly beauty routine!

At the end of a long day, one of the last things I want to do is remove my makeup. Climbing straight into bed sounds so much better! But my mama taught me better than that, so before I hit the hay I spend 30 seconds taking off my makeup and cleansing my skin with this natural makeup remover.

Natural Ingredients

The rosewater is homemade from our amazing recipe HERE [1]. You will feel the difference this makes for your skin after only one use. It’s mildly astringent, but still gentle on skin. Rosewater can also help soothe irritated or dry skin. Maybe that’s why it’s been used by beautiful women for generations.

(If you don’t have time to make your own rosewater, we strongly suggest purchasing this brand or Organic Bulgarian Rosewater [2]. It’s organic and has great results!)

There is gentle cleansing power from the pure unscented Castile soap [3] in the recipe. There is nothing like this simple soap to wash away dead skin cells and makeup residue to leave your face pure and fresh.

The vegetable glycerine [4] was added to help moisturize your skin leaving it radiant and not overly dry. Glycerine is known to draw moisture to your skin for a more youthful, fresh quality.

Calendula oil [5] is our special ingredient to help you face heal from minor irritations. Calendula oil is excellent for soothing sensitive or irritated skin.

Finally, we utilize the beauty secret that is as old as history: Lavender essential oil. It’s calming properties are suitable for all skin types.

For all these reasons, this makeup remover is now a part of my daily beauty routine.

Questions you might be wondering about this recipe:

My makeup remover isn’t really foamy. What did I do wrong?

If you follow the recipe above, you’ll get a frothy amount of makeup remover from the foaming soap dispenser. It might not be as light and fluffy as a pure foaming soap due to all the amazing moisturizing ingredients we added. It still works great and I love that the foaming dispenser puts out a small amount. If you’re anything like me, you tend to use too much soap and makeup remover even when a little bit will do. This foaming dispenser helps the recipe last longer by dispensing less than if you just put it in a squirt bottle.

I don’t have (or don’t like) all the Lavender essential oil in this recipe. What can I remove or replace?

Feel free to substitute other oils for the Lavender. You might consider substituting (or adding in) Geranium, Palmarosa, or Rose essential oils for their beauty qualities.

Can I use something other than Castile soap as the cleanser in this recipe? What if want something even more gentle than Castile soap?

Yes, if you want to use this recipe with a cleanser, I cheer you on for finding what works best for you. We highly recommend this unscented organic sugar soap [13] because it is gentle and very moisturizing compared to Castile soap. You can directly (1:1) substitute sugar soap for Castile soap in this recipe. Note: This definitely froths less than Castile soap. So you

Do I have to use the vegetable glycerine in this recipe?

You are welcome to remove the vegetable glycerine or simply replace it with an equal amount of almond oil [14] (also a super moisturizer with oodles of vitamin E!). We’ve tested this recipe with and without glycerine. It does slightly change the silkiness of the foam, but the cleansing and soothing results are the same.

What if I don’t want to use calendula oil?

Calendula oil is a big player in this recipe for its healing properties. You can also add calendula gel [6] if you have that on hand. (We also use this gel in our Blemish Gel recipe [15] and it’s great to have on hand for naturally encouraging skin health.)  If you choose not to include it in your batch, feel free to replace it with more glycerine or leave it out if you wish. However, please note that the recipe has not been tested with these variations.

Do I have to use rosewater?

Rosewater provides cleansing and toning power in this recipe. If you must go without it, please make sure to use distilled water in its place.

Where can I find the ingredients and containers you use?

All of our favorite ingredients are linked inside the recipe (above). Just click on the product name and you’ll be forwarded to a page where you can purchase it for yourself.

Can I add more essential oils than the recipe calls for?

Feel free to double the drops of essential oils. Make sure to write down any modifications so you’ll be able to keep track of all the details of your new favorite recipe.

Is this recipe safe for use on young people?

We believe this recipe to be safe for all individuals over age 2…but please tell me your toddler doesn’t need makeup remover! Also, you’re the parent, so do your own research and follow all safety guidelines with children [16].
