My kids have been on this essential oil journey right along with me. They love to sit with me as I open my monthly Essential Rewards order so they can see all the new oils I’ve selected. It took us only a few months to start making our own nighttime essential oil blends for kids. We’ve found that certain essential oils help the kids feel relaxed. Here are some of our favorite bedtime essential oil blends for kids.

bedtime essential oil roller blends for kids and children

In the beginning, the kids would gather around after brushing their teeth and each one would stick out their feet. Even the littlest toddler would stick her feet in the air and say, “Give me some oils, Mommy!”

Which Essential Oils Do Your Kids LOVE to Use?

The beautiful part was always when each child got to pick out their favorite oils each night. They all gravitated toward their favorites. Every once in a while they would combine their old classics with a new, adventurous choice.

It’s important to note that I didn’t just let the children pick whatever oils they thought looked pretty. They are only offered oils that I know are safe for children.

Also, I introduce new oils by themselves by diluting them and trying them out on the child’s arm. I could test one oil a week. That way I could watch for any irritation, itching, or redness on the test patch.

The nightly routine settled down and then it got a little messy. I was opening and closing bottles with slippery hands from the carrier oil and I really needed to figure out how to simplify the process. I didn’t want to have to keep opening all those bottles each night.

Roller Bottles and Recycling

When we implemented personal roll-ons, then our nighttime routine became magical!

My sons loved it because then they could apply the oils themselves without mom having to help. My daughters loved it because they got to pick out their favorite roller bottle and put a flower and heart sticker on it.

Sometimes we recycle an empty 15ml bottle and attach an AromaGlide Fitment (check out easy steps here).

For these 15ml recycled bottles, we add 3 drops of essential oil and then fill the rest with either fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil.

Both of these carrier oils are very light and easily absorbed into the skin. (Read more about carrier oils and their uses here.)

We also have purchased some roller bottles online. They come with directions and it’s important to follow those guidelines. Some bottles we’ve ordered are not recommended for using certain essential oils. Make sure to read all product information before purchasing so you’re not disappointed.

However, we love the bottles above and they’ve worked very well when we haven’t had enough empty YL bottles around. Plus, you can get these super cute waterproof roller bottle labels for a great price to keep all your blends organized.

Making Your Own Essential Oil Bedtime Blends for Kids

Here are some of our favorite nighttime essential oils for blending:

  • Cedarwood Essential Oil
  • Frankincense Essential Oil

  • Geranium Essential Oil
  • Joy Essential Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
  • Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil
  • Vetiver Essential Oil

We dilute our roll-on blends to about 1% (1 drop of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil). All of our children are over 2 and this is a great dilution ratio for kids. You can read more about dilution and essential oil usage for children here.

We let the kids roll the blends onto their own feet and then return the bottles to me. The roll-on bottles are always stored safely out of reach of children.
