Smells happen. They show up in the oddest places at the worst times and stay longer than you’d like. Thankfully you probably have all the ingredients in your home right now to make your own homemade deodorizers. Try a batch of these DIY Deodorizing Disks today!
The first place I wanted to freshen up was my linen closet. I don’t know how a small area full of freshly cleaned linens can get so stuffy smelling. I just place one of these disks in there and then I get to enjoy the fresh, clean scent every time we change the sheets. The disks seem to last forever, but it’s probably more accurate that they need to be replaced twice a year.
Deodorizing disks can be placed under the sink in your guest bathroom or inside your teenager’s closet. Different issues. Same fresh solution.
The baking soda acts to naturally neutralize odors. The combination of Lavender and Lemon Essential Oils bring a bright and fresh herbal scent. The secret ingredient in our Deodorizing Disks is the vanilla extract. Oh my! It just adds the perfect touch of sweetness!
This pan is the key to making Deodorizing Disks the perfect size! Each cavity holdsย just the right amount because nobody needs a hockey puck deodorizer, right?!ย And truthfully the pattern is adorable. The compartments are non-stick. The recipe makes about 20 of these little cookie sized disks.
Thisย little scalloped cookie pan would also work!
Or how cute is this daisy pan?! (click here to grab one for yourself)ย Same size and depth for great results and easy to remove from the silicone pan.

Deodorizing Disks
Ingredients
- 1 cup baking soda
- 4 tablespoons distilled water
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 15 drops Lemon Essential Oil
- 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
Directions
- Mix all ingredients in a small glass bowl.
- Divide the mixture into your cookie panย (or this one) to make about 20 disks.
- Allow to dry completely, probably overnight. DO NOT remove them while they are still damp. They’ll fall apart.
- To use: Place in your refrigerator, linen closet, or any place that needs deodorizing. Replace as needed.
- Store any unused disks in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
*NOTE: Please make sure to place these out of reach of your little ones. Children could mistake these for cookies and you don’t want that. They’ll taste terrible.

Can you use a silicone muffin pan or wil the oils do something to the silicone?
Beth K says
I’ve successfully used silicone pans in the past. I use those pans as dedicated for food or dedicated for crafts/DIY since sometimes they carry the oil scent with them for a very long time and I just don’t want my food smelling like Purification. I hope that helps. ๐
Pat McCray says
Can acrylic candy molds be used. Is there a thickness that works best with this recipe?
Beth K says
Pat, I’ve only ever used a coated metal pan and silicone molds. Let me know if you have success with acrylic.
I like these deodorizing disks to be thin so they dry quickly and I’m not having a big hunk of baking soda chunks laying around.
Angela says
I made these about 15 hours ago and they are like sand still. Do they take longer to dry or did I do something wrong.
Beth K says
Angela,
That could definitely depend on the thickness of the disks and the room they’re stored in. If the environment is cool and/or humid then it could take longer. You can pop them in an oven at 170 degrees for a little while to finish them out if you like, but then some of the essential oil power will be diminished by the heat.
Melissa says
These look just wonderful. Where do you find the metal pan?
Beth K says
This is the pan I have. I love it!

Melissa says
Thank you!
Janey says
Below you mentioned a reader said a metal pan didnโt work for her. The pan in this link looks metal, but I donโt see where it specifically says what itโs made of. Is your pan metal?
Thanks!
Paulette says
Because I’m too cheap to buy one of those pans on Amazon and pay shipping, I was wondering what you’d suggest I use instead. Would a normal size muffin tin work if I just press the stuff in the bottom? Are your disks approx. 1/4 inch thick? Thanks!
Beth K says
These disks are very thin. One-quarter inch sounds right to me. Let us know how that works for you. ๐
Adrienne says
How long does the smell remain?
Beth K says
The smell does evaporate over time. It depends on the essential oils that you use. I find the strong oils linger around 3 weeks before they need refreshed.
Sandi says
Can you then just add a drop,of essential oil ontomthe disk to refresh? making once, using several times?
Beth K says
That would work great, Sandi!
Debbie Bragnalo says
So easy and natural! Thanks for sharing
Kathy Ortega says
Why do you have to use distilled water?
Jenn says
Kathy, great question! Distilled water has been treated to remove all impurities that could cause a recipe/product to become contaminated or spoil faster etc.
Michelle says
I tried these and they just crumbled, even after sitting overnight in the molds. They also went from a pretty ivory color to a dark sand color. What did I do wrong?
Beth K says
Hmmm, I’m not sure. Were you able to use all of the ingredients and supplies listed in the recipe? We have heard from other readers who tried to use metal pans and those results did not work out at all. Not sure if maybe that’s what you’re facing.
Reema says
If we put this in muslin bags would it reduce the smell?
Beth K says
That might make them last a little longer since they’d be protected from any bumps and some of the humidity from the home would be kept away. I do agree that this might minimize the scent a little. You could always double the drops of oils and see if that helps!
Callie says
Could this be used in a storage chest? My blankets smell very musty and I’ve been looking for a solution.
Beth K says
Oh, that’s a perfect idea for these!
Tina says
Thanks for the recipe; I am going to try it today. I have a couple of questions, though. 1) I saw a couple of people post about issues with metal pans, yet the pan used is metal. I clicked on the link in the recipe and bought that Wilton pan, it is metal, hmm, am I going to have issues? My second question, the pan only comes with 12 cavities and not 24 such as shown in the example. The recipe states it makes 20 disks. Can I store the extra dough in a baggie and finish the recipe tomorrow after the first batch has had time to dry? Thanks.
Diana M says
Hi Tina! Yes, we used the metal pan listed in this post with no issues. You definitely want to give them plenty of time to dry. If you store the dough in an airtight container you can make another batch the next day ๐
Cathy S says
Could you substitute with peppermint oil and use this recipe for a spider/insect repellent disc? Thanks!
Diana M says
Hi Cathy! Yes, peppermint would be a good choice. I haven’t tried it yet, so let us know how it works ๐ I use a cotton ball with peppermint to help repel ants.
Angela says
What a cute pan for making a fun design!
