This sweet and replenishing homemade vanilla lip balm is simple to make yourself with just a few ingredients, and it’s amazing at keeping your kisser healthy. It’s also perfect for colder weather when our lips need a little extra nourishment.
Our tried and true (and loved!) recipe features two of our all-time favorite carrier oils, Avocado Oil and Coconut Oil. Both moisturize and enrich your skin’s softness for hours. Plus, we added a boost of vitamin E for extra beautiful and silky lips.
This balm goes on smooth and you can feel it giving you that extra layer of moisture. Plus, the beeswax is perfect for holding in all that moisture and creating a barrier against wind and dryness.
The Bergamot and Geranium essential oils in this recipe are used not only for their uplifting, sweet, and citrusy floral aroma but also because they are perfect for tender skin.
Can you use other essential oils? YES!
Here’s a couple of ideas to get you thinking:
- Lavender
- Elemi
- Rose
- Orange
- Grapefruit
- Peppermint
And, don’t be afraid to use this lip balm on your whole family. All the ingredients (as written below) are regarded for being gentle and appropriate even for sensitive skin.
This recipe is super simple, but you will need a few special tools on hand to make sure it comes together perfectly.
- Precise, digital kitchen scale – Your food scale needs to measure down to 1 gram since that’s the unit we use for this recipe.
- Lip Balm Tubes – I love these tubes we found. They’re ready to use and quite inexpensive.

What kind of vanilla extract do you use? Can you link to a reputable brand?
Beth K says
We make our own vanilla extract. You can find great directions here.
J says
Can I also use other oils? I don’t have Geranium and Bergamot.
Thank you!
Beth K says
You sure can! Use any combination you like and let us know what you come up with. We’d love to hear your success story!
Mandy says
What can be substituted for the coconut oil? (Allergies here…)
Also, have you found a shea butter brand that does not have a cocoa-is scent (is that even a thing)?
Beth K says
You could possibly try Rosehip Seed Oil or Olive oil to see how firm the lip balm sets. If it’s not firm enough you can just melt the first try again and add in a touch more beeswax.
I don’t have any negative feelings about the scent of the shea butter linked in our recipe, but please let us know if you find one you love!

Hi, how many of those lip balm tubes can we get from the recipe?
Can I completely omit the vanilla extract and will this affect the recipe?
Jenn says
The recipe states 4 tubes. We did not create this recipe without vanilla, so you could experiment with changes if you’d like. 🙂
Colette says
Can you make this without beeswax? Allergic to it. Thanks!
Jenn says
We have not tested this recipe without beeswax, so I can’t help you with that. If you do experiment, be sure to let us know the results! 🙂
Terri says
Looks like a great recipe but don’t have scale. Wish ingredients were in standard measurements.
Cathy says
Can you use cocoa butter?
Beth K says
I love cocoa butter. That would be great in place of the shea butter in this recipe. Try this one that we love (affiliate link) – https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-7680-Butter-7-Ounce/dp/B004X8IFUW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1506454722&sr=8-11&keywords=cocoa+butter&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=recwitessoil-20&linkId=67781e60135be20d81a23095554326b5

Can u just use coconut oil beeswax and vanilla extract
Beth K says
We’ve not tested that combination but give it a go and let us know how it turns out! 🙂
JoAnn Adams says
Would bergamot be ok to use, if you’re going to be out in the sun?
Beth K says
I’ve never had an issue with it causing problems, but if you’d like to substitute then you could substitute Lavender with great success.
Chris says
Is there any way to convert this recipe if you don’t have scales? Would really like to try this
Recipes With Essential Oils says
Hi Chris! We found a scale to be the most accurate since we were using such small amounts. We have not converted the recipe, but we may consider it.
Thanks! ~ Diana
Donaria says
I used pure vanilla extract in a lip balm recipe and it separated and leaked out the bottom of the tube. Did I do something wrong? can I try something different? I was considering purchasing vanilla oleoresin for lip balm purposes, do you think this would work better?
Diana M says
What kind of vanilla extract did you use? We tested this with a homemade version. The quality of the vanilla is important since most store bought vanillas contain corn syrup. That may be the cause of the separation.
Liz says
Hello,
Which coconut oil have you used?
The liquid one in the plastic bottle or the solid one in the glass jars?
Thank you.
Diana M says
Hi Liz! For this recipe we used solid (nor fractionated) coconut oil in a jar and melted it down. Hope that helps!

I converted recipe and came up with this: Doubled everything in grams and converted to teaspoon. 14g avocado oil is 2.94 tsp. 10g she’s butter and beeswax is 2.12 tsp. 6g coconut oil is 1.26 tsp. 2g vitamin E oil is.43 tsp. Just double vanilla and essential oils, best I can do
